Welcome to Northeast Dianli University

    Northeast Dianli University (NEDU) is one of key universities in Jilin province, located in Jilin City with attractive scenery and surrounded by mountains and hills in the northern of China. NEDU is a multidisciplinary university, its principle majors are engineering specialties, which develop harmoniously with other specialties such as science, management, liberal arts, law, economics and education. NEDU has been searching for the survival by bettering the quality and promoting the development by reforms since it was founded. The good school motto "Diligent, Rigorous, Realistic and Creative"and the personnel cultivation system of laying stress on PCP (Practice ability, Creativeness sense and Pioneering spirit) characteristics have taken shape. NEDU has made great contribution to the state power industry, especially to Northeast power industry and the economic and social development of Jilin province.

    NEDU was first founded in 1949, it grew out of Changchun Electrical Machinery Advanced Professional School, which was the first school of electrical Engineering set up by the new republic. In 1955, the school moved to Jilin City from Changchun. In 1958, it became an undergraduate institute of higher learning, named Jilin Electric Power Institute. In 1978, its name was changed to Northeast China Institute of Electric Power Engineering. Originally the university had been under leadership of Ministry of Electric Power. From 2000, the university has been under the management model of joint-building by the central and local governments. Approved by the Ministry of Education in December 2005, its name was changed to Northeast Dianli University.

    The university is one of the first groups of institutions awarding master degrees, and now 32 majors can award master degrees. The university has a right to award a Master Degree to working staff applicants with a diploma equivalent to graduates and working staff can apply for master's degree since 1998 and it has a right to award a Master Degree of Engineering to working staff applicants in six engineering fields since 2003. The university has the doctorate degree programs jointly operated with Harbin Institute of Technology and North China Electric Power University since 1992. In 2003, the State Council approved that two subjects "Power System and Automation"and "Thermal Power Engineering"can enroll and cultivate doctorate degree candidates by the way of separately planned, jointly operated with well-known universities.

    There are 14235 full time students, among them, there are 1012 postgraduate students for doctor and master degree, 13223 full-time undergraduate and professional training students; 5185 undergraduate and professional training part-time students, and 190 in-service students for Master of Engineering on the campus.

    It presently comprises 18 colleges, departments and 8 research institutions. There are 32 undergraduate majors, which covers 5 disciplines: engineering, science, management, liberal arts, law.

    Among 1, 422 staff members, there are 725 teachers including 122 professors, 356 associate professors. There is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, there are 3 state-level middle-aged and young experts with special contributions, 2 state-level first group candidates for "New Century Bai-Qian-Wan Talented Personnel Project", 43 people who share the Government Special Allowance, 3 Jilin province outstanding experts, 8 province-level middle-aged and young experts with special contributions on professional techniques, one person was awarded the title of the provincial chief professor, 6 persons were awarded the title of the provincial leading professors and middle-aged and young backbone teachers and 9 Ph.D. supervisors.

    The campus covers 80, 8000 square meters including floor space of 485,000 square meters. There are 34 laboratories matched with related subjects, among the laboratories, there are4 provincial first level laboratories, 4 province-level basic and professional basic laboratories, 1 provincial key engineering training center being constructed, 1 provincial key basic experiment teaching center being constructed, 1 state professional skill training institution, 1 campus teaching practice base, 23 outside campus teaching practice bases. The library covers 13,000 squares meters, where about 1,253,000 books and 3382 kinds of domestic and overseas periodicals are collected. The university is Jilin City Node of CERNET. The permanent assets' value of the university is 770 million Yuan RMB.

    In recent years, the university has undertaken 9 state-level teaching reform projects, 40 teaching achievements won state-level, province-level and ministry-level excellent prizes, 6 courses were chosen as province-level elaborate courses and 31 courses were chosen as province-level and ministry-level excellent courses.

    Student delegations of the university have won 10 first prizes and 19 second prizes in National Graduate Students Mathematics Model Contests, National College Students Mathematics Model Contests and National College Students Electronic Design Contests. Students of Fashion Design and Performance have made great achievements in all kinds of national and international contests, and won for many times the highest prizes in the fashion designing, fashion show, and model contests. In 1999, the Dean's Office was awarded as National Higher Education Excellent Dean's Office. The employment rate of undergraduates at one time keeps steadily higher than 90%, which ranks in front of the universities of Jilin province. Youth League Committee of the university has been awarded many times National Advanced Unit for College students' San Xia Xiang (College Students bring technology, culture and medicine to countryside) and Social Practice by the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee, Ministry of Education and Central Committee of Communist Youth League. In 2000, it was awarded National Wu Si Red Flag Youth League Committee by Central Committee of Communist Youth League. In 2000, the university was chosen as Excellent University for Practicing Regulations of Physical Education.

    There are 5 province-level key subjects, they are Power System and Automation, Thermal Power Engineering, Thermo Physics, Fluid Machinery Engineering and Power Electronics and Power Drive, 2 province-level key subjects being constructed are Applied Chemistry and Control Theory and Control Engineering.

    The University has achieved great success in scientific research. Since the Ninth Five-Year Plan of the country, there have been 9755 academic papers published in domestic and overseas academic journals, and approximately 811 academic papers have been cited by SCI, EI and ISTP. 461 monographs and textbooks have come off the press. The university has undertaken 18 state level scientific research projects, 128 provincial and ministry level scientific research projects. The university has won 2 state level awards for the achievements in scientific research and 72 provincial level and ministry level awards for the scientific research. The Department of Scientific Research was awarded the advanced Group for Scientific Research Management in the period of the Eighth Five-Year Plan of the country and the Ninth Five-Year Plan of the country by the State Education Committee and Ministry of Education in 1996 and 2001.

    The PCP characteristics (Practice ability , Creativeness sense and Pioneering spirit) has taken shape during long-term educational development and teaching practice, and has won wide praise from the society. Graduates of the university with their solid theory, earnest and diligent style, and courage to overcome hardships and better comprehensive capability have won wide welcome from employers all over the country. Mr. Zhang Guixing, former Chief Engineer of State Power Corporation, now the Consultant of State Grid Corporation of China, also the chief engineer of State Electricity Regulatory Committee, the chief engineers of Northeast China Grid Company Limited, Northwest China Grid Company Limited, Central China Grid Company Limited, East China Grid Company Limited are all graduates of the university.

    The university has conducted academic exchange and cooperation in scientific research with related colleges and universities or scientific research institutions in the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Russia, Republic of Korea, Germany, Ukraine, Canada, and Bulgaria. Since 1998, the university started to enroll foreign students. Approved by the Office of Academic Degree of the State Council, an undergraduate degree cooperative program of two majors-Business Management and Business Information System is being implemented with Utah State University.
